Old man on Friend St. calls me illiterate and vapid, redeems self in under ten minutes by appealing to my superficial side.

Street vendor giving away free Boston Herald, in response to me waving him away: "You look like you should read this."

My retort: "That's not a very nice thing to say ..."

Same street vendor roughly ten minutes later, as I once again turn down free newspaper: "You're too cute to be walking around this street. "*

I'm now a subscriber of the Boston Herald.

*Friend St., of course is ... a really dirty street, a result of Boston's central artery which used to be above it and ripped down as part of the Big Dig. Today's history lesson brought to you by the letter "z."
